Shop-with-a-Cop is a cooperative youth intervention program involving local law enforcement, Bixby Rotary and the Bixby Wal-Mart store. Youth are selected to participate in a Christmas shopping trip with Police Officers and Rotarians. During a time of socialization and interaction, the Officers and Rotarians help the youth make a shopping list of Christmas presents for their family, then assist them in the purchase of the gift.
(1.) Welcome Desk for Check In (2.) Teams of three will be assigned: Rotarian, Officer and the shopper. Before the shop begins each team will meet and go over the expectations of the shopping experience and eliminate any fear for the child. (3.) Hospitality area for waiting parents and siblings. (4.) Gift Wrapping- Rotarians will transport the purchased gifts to Bixby Telephone Company (BTC) and help wrap the gifts (5.) Delivery –The police officers will choose a day and deliver the gifts, along with a turkey or ham, to each family.
The goal of this program is to provide a positive environment and function at which an at-risk youth can meet a Police Officer. Since the targeted youth is of a young age, it is the hope that meeting an officer and having a positive experience can help that youth in the future to either avoid trouble, or create a bond and/or general trust in Police Officers in order to seek future help.
The Targeted Youth for this program are generally 7 to 15 years old. Most have come from environments that have had less than positive situations that involved law enforcement or are in a home environment where they are frequently exposed to Police intervention. Additional considerations are made for poor economic conditions where there would otherwise be little or no Christmas in the home. The sources used to refer the youth are the school Resource Officers, School Counselors, and the Bixby Community Outreach Center. The BCOC is the organizational umbrella in which all referrals for the “Shop with a Cop” are processed.
We use $5000 of the budget which comes from the efforts of the Bixby Rotary BBQ & Music Festival fundraiser held each spring. Additional funding comes from private and corporate contributions. The average cost of each shop is $100. The current funding will provide for 50 children. We would like to include as many children as possible. Help sponsor a shopper with giving of any amount.
